Rail on industrial platforms
If employees are the only ones up there, OSHA rules usually apply: top rail at 42 inches, plus or minus 3, a midrail about halfway, and toeboards where anything could get kicked off the edge. The top rail has to hold 200 pounds. Open to the public, the building code's 42-inch guard and 4-inch openings take over.

How much weight can a mezzanine hold?
Whatever it's designed for. Light storage mezzanines are commonly designed around 125 pounds per square foot. Heavier storage or equipment needs its own design. We work from an engineered drawing.
Does a mezzanine need a permit?
Almost always in a commercial building. It changes the floor area and egress. We'll work with your engineer or architect to get the drawings the city needs.
Can you add rail and stairs to an existing platform?
Yes. A lot of our mezzanine work is adding OSHA rail, a stair or a ship's ladder to a platform that's already there.
